J/100 Announced for Summer 2004 Launch
J/100: JBoats' new 33 foot daysailerFebruary 13th 2004
J Boats announced to their dealer network today the introduction of a modern 33 footer, designated the J/100, aimed at the day sailing, local weekday-evening non-spinnaker racing,?and weekend overnight markets. The boat is to be built in the USA by TPI Composites in Warren RI using the patented SCRIMP resin infusion process. Launching of the first boat is anticipated in early June. J Boat founders, Rod and Bob Johnstone, both plan on owning one of the first hulls.
J/100 is designed with a self-bailing cockpit having full-length seats with backrests and a full-width dodger for weather protection. The simple interior layout includes 2 berths and a marine head. A forward v-berth is optional. If the wind dies, a 10 HP Yanmar diesel auxiliary with folding prop is standard.
J/100 is unique compared to traditional open cockpit designs used for day sailing and is thus is not restricted for safety or performance reasons inside of protected harbors. Her self-bailing cockpit, stability and waterline length (LWL) is comparable to many 40 footers for faster, more comfortable day trips in open water.
Evident from her simple, efficient deck layout with controls for the roller-furled jib and mainsail close at hand? to the safety of an easily accessed transom platform with drop-down swim ladder, J/100 is designed with single-handed sailing in mind.
While the lead bulb keel gives J/100 great stability and a “bigger-boat” feel, she’s light and nimble enough at 6500 lbs. to be?easily handled by a family crew whether trimming sails, pushing off a piling or trailing her south for winter. Two keel configurations are available, standard 5.5′ and optional shoal keel of 4.5′.
J/100 is designed to encourage participation by family and friends, whether young children, pick-up crews for local non-spinnaker events or sailing solo from one’s mooring in front of the house.
