Mercury-Powered Racer Bests Field in Rouen

FOND DU LAC, Wisc. — For the ninth time in 10 years, Mercury won the grueling 24 Hours of Rouen endurance powerboat race Thursday, May 2 in Rouen, France. In addition, nine of the top 10 boats were powered by Mercury outboards.
Rouen tests both man and machine as boats run non-stop, with the exception of fuel stops and driver exchanges, for 24 hours. Mercury has powered more first-place finishers at Rouen than any other engine builder, Mercury SST 120/S2000 Race outboard-powered “Team LPTT” won the 40th running of the world’s most demanding powerboat race. “Team LPTT” also won the Class 2 competition. “Team LPTT” pilots Philippe Masselin, Jean-Marie Guerra, Tomas Cermak and Ghislain Boucher completed 745 laps for the win.
Their Mercury SST 120/S2000 race outboard ran without a hitch. The only change made throughout the race, other than the mandatory two-hour driver change and necessary fuel, was a precautionary gearcase change at 3 a.m.
Weather conditions, typical for Rouen this time of year, included a mix of rain and sunshine with high winds and changing tides stirring up rough course conditions on the famous River Seine.
Despite several boat-related challenges, the sole Mercury Racing SST OptiMax 200XS race outboard entry powered “Team Sonautic,” a large DAC hull piloted by French Mercury dealer Jean Vital Deguisne, Cedric Deguisne and
William Colombelli, to a second-place finish just five laps behind the winner. The team encountered several boat-related challenges, including a steering pulley failure, a gearcase nosecone repair and picklefork replacement.
Mercury S3000 race outboard-powered “Ghostbuster” completed 720 laps to finish third overall and win the Class 3 competition. Both Johnson S3000 race outboard-powered “Team RMSM” boats suffered failed powerheads, forcing them to drop from the race. Mercury SST 120/S2000 race outboards powered fifth- through eighth-place finishers to sweep Class 2 competition.
