MIAMI — Herb McCormick, editor of Cruising World magazine received the 2001 Moulton H. “Monk” Farnham Award for Excellence in Editorial Commentary from BoatU.S. McCormick received the award February 15 during a ceremony held in conjunction with the annual meeting and awards program for Boating Writers International at the Miami Boat Show.
The award was established by BoatU.S. in memory of Monk Farnham, former chairman of the BoatU.S. National Advisory Council and an outspoken editor of a number of boating magazines. The honor recognizes editors of boating and fishing magazines with a passion for boating, a crusading spirit and a willingness to use their editorial page to lead the debate on issues facing our community and industry.
During an awards ceremony, McCormick was recognized by BoatU.S. Vice President Michael Sciulla for using his column to challenge, among other things, the state of Rhode Island’s heavy-handed approach to onboard marine sanitation devices. “It took some guts to take on a home state political establishment,” said Sciulla, noting that Cruising World magazine is based in Newport, Rhode Island.
The Monk Farnham award includes a hand-crafted trophy depicting a quill pen drawing inspirational “ink” from a series of rolling waves as well as a check for $1,000.
Previous winners include Skip Allen, former editor and publisher of Southern Boating; Bill Sisson, editor of Soundings; Bill Schanen, editor and publisher of Sailing magazine; Matt Trulio, former executive editor of Powerboat magazine and current powerboat editor for boats.com (and current editor at large for Powerboat magazine); and Chris Landry of Powerboat Reports.
The judges for this year’s award included Wolcott “Tony” Gibbs, a former editor of Yachting, Islands and The New Yorker; Chuck Husick, an Ocean Navigator contributing editor and former president of Chris Craft Boats; Dean Clarke, executive editor of Sport Fishing magazine and Michael Sciulla, the editor of BoatU.S. Magazine.
