Malibu Releases 2002 Model Line

Malibu to offer 15 tow-boat models in 2002.

MERCED, Calif. — Malibu Boats will offer five new tow boats for 2002, in addition to its 10 existing models. Production of the new and existing boats began July 1.

According to a press release from Malibu, its research and development team focused on versatility in creating “the first true cross-training tow boat.” The company also has added three new wakeboard models.

Here is a look — the first offered to the public — at Malibu’s 2002 model line:

Sportster Series

The Sportster and Sportster LX are Malibu’s value-level boats, according to the company, and have bold new looks. Among the aesthetic changes for the 2002 is a streamlined LS1 motor box, which houses a standard 310-horsepower Vortec engine.

Response Series

Available in an open or closed-bow configuration, the 2002 Response Series was designed with competition-level performance as a key goal. Built on Malibu’s SV23 Diamond hull, the Response has four-color gelcoat graphics and new drip-molded Malibu side decals. In the cockpit, the Response features durable “space-age” flooring that, according to the manufacturer, dampens sound and supports a new low-profile motor box.

Sunsetter

Tagged a “terrific value as a family-class boat” by Malibu, the Sunsetter blends the versatility of an open-bow model with solid performance towing for skiers and boarders of various levels. Riding on Malibu’s Diamond hull, the 2002 Sunsetter sports new gelcoat graphics, as well as new drip-molded Malibu side decals accented with shadows of silver or gold. Helm station highlights include a new dash and a new steering wheel.

Sunsetter LXi

A Powerboat magazine Tow Boat of the Year winner, the Sunsetter LXi is the largest boat to pass the American Water Ski Association testing criteria for towing, according to Malibu. The boat is built on Malibu’s SV23 Diamond hull. Exterior details include gelcoat graphics and drip-molded side decals. The Sunsetter LXi also boasts a new LS1 style motor box and a new swiveling driver’s seat.

Wakesetter LXi

A dedicated wakeboarding machine, Malibu’s Wakesetter LXi was designed for maximum passenger and gear capacity. The boat rides on a SV23 Diamond hull. Ten gelcoat color packages are offered, and the graphics are accented with what Malibu calls “tribal art-style” decals. Other standard features include a fold-down tower, the Malibu Launch System and a wake-building Wedge.

Sunsetter XTi

According to Malibu, the Sunsetter XTi bridges the gap between
V-drive space and direct-drive handling. The interior of the boat is designed to make optimal use of the 23-foot-long SV23 Diamond hull. Able to seat 13 people, the boat features a swiveling driver’s seat, an oversized observer’s seat and a wrap-around lounge aft. The driver’s area is tucked behind a newly developed hand-sewn dash with illuminating rocker switches and 5″-diameter Servo- driven gauges. Malibu replaced the boat’s engine box with a 60″ x 40″ center mount sundeck, which extends behind the driver all the way to the boats interior side panel. The exterior of the Sunsetter XTi is complimented by four-color gelcoat graphics and drip-molded side decals.

Wakeboarding-specific goodies include Malibu’s Wedge, the Malibu Launch System and a fold-down tower. The Wakesetter XTi sports traditional Wakesetter gelcoat graphics and all-new Malibu tattoo side decals.

Built on the same SV23 Diamond Hull introduced on the VLX in 2001, the 2002 21 Sunscape LSV reportedly offers the same responsive handling and smooth slalom wakes. Aesthetic enhancements include a sleek deck, new four-color gelcoat graphics and a black chrome Malibu decal with silver or gold back shadow. The boat’s interior was redesigned with custom colors and a wraparound lounge. At the helm, there’s a new ergonomically designed dash and molded steering wheel.

The boat seats 11 people, and its interior has been redesigned to provide more free space. Its helm station features a contoured seat complete with air lumbar support. Mechanical control highlights include Malibu’s zero-friction throttle cables and rack-and-pinion steering.

The largest model in the Malibu line, the 25-foot-long Sunscape 25 LSV features a six-position power seat, Zero-Friction throttle cables, rack-and-pinion steering and a dash-and -throttle console with 5″ instruments. Cruise control is optional. Seating is offered in the open-bow area and cockpit, which includes a mid-boat bench.
