KEY WEST, Fla. — “The Hemingway Challenge,” a half-hour television program showcasing Ernest Hemingway’s love of fishing for marlin in the waters off Key West, is to air on the Sunshine Network at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 30; 11 p.m. Sunday, July 8, and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 10. All times are EDT.

The program was shot during the 2000 Drambuie on Ice Key West Marlin Tournament, held July 19-22 in conjunction with the 20th annual Hemingway Days Festival. It was funded by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council and Visit Florida.

As well as capturing the intense physical work and excitement of landing a large marlin, “The Hemingway Challenge” explores the reasons Hemingway loved marlin fishing off Key West — as well as the way his fishing tactics have influenced modern marlin fishermen.

Program highlights include an interview outlining Hemingway’s first meeting with Gregorio Fuentes, the man who became his trusted fishing captain, when Fuentes reportedly rescued Hemingway and towed him to safety after his fishing boat broke down at the marlin grounds.

Other highlights include rare aerial footage shot from a helicopter of a blue marlin being hooked.

The Drambuie on Ice Key West Marlin Tournament offers anglers the chance to compete for more than $234,000 in cash and features marlin, dolphin, tuna and wahoo divisions. The 2001 tournament, which is slated to be covered in a half-hour show for The National Network (TNN), is scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday, July 18-22.
