The latest from X-Yachts of Denmark is the IMX 40, a racer/cruiser with the emphasis on racing. The first IMX 40s have had great success in European events this summer. Hull #1, Courrier Nord, won the IRM Championship (IRC Group 1) and placed first in the IRC Group 1 fleet in the Hoya Round the Island Race. Hull #3 placed fifth overall at the IMS European Championship at Punta Ala in June, beaten only by IMS 50-footers.
The hull is vacuum-bagged vinylester resin with biaxial and unidirectional E glass incorporating varying thickness Divinicell in the outer skin. The mast and boom are carbon-fiber and built by Nordic Mast. The backstay is adjusted with a line driven system using a Frederickson shaft and drum below deck. X-Yachts claims that the system is quicker and smoother than a hydraulic system and will allow the mainsheet trimmer to put as much as 2800 kgs. of load on the backstay. Deck hardware is either Fredericksen or Harken depending on the buyer’s preference. Running rigging is Vectran and Spectra.
The engine is a 40-horsepower Volvo MD 2040-s saildrive with a two-blade Flex-O-Fold racing propeller. The 25-gallon fuel tank is located below the port main cabin sofa. Fresh water capacity is 50 gallons and located opposite the fuel tank below the starboard sofa.
Over 35 of the boats are on order with a current delivery date for new orders of spring, 2001.
